A Mary Poppins for the 21st Century (Mary-Jane Poppins)

My goal in writing this screen play was to simultaneously confuse what it means to be Black, European, and American. There is often static associations that people have in mind when they think of these things. Where does a Jamaican-British national fit into the notion of being black? Where does a half black woman fit into being European? How does an immigrant fit into being American? People often have very static definitions of these characterizations. What I set out to do with Mary was to make her break all three of these notions simulateously. I also played with the notion of Mary Poppins being a transient Jipsy character seeing that she is constantly traveling from place to place, instead of selling something she is presenting her world view as a critique of society..
