James Iliff
Having directed his first short film on the RED when he was seventeen years old, James has always been immersed in filmmaking. At SMC, James formed No Hero Films with his filmmaking compatriots Christopher Pollock and Michael Hall. He shot and edited Xombie Corps, which went on to win the Audience Choice Award at the SMC Film Festival 2009. He then shot and edited No Hero’s next project, Vindictive Swindlers, a crime comedy by Thiago Tassini. In 2010, James began working as director for the Santa Monica Filmmakers Association, until he moved on to USC to continue his academic career
Outside of college, James works as a graphic designer and developer for talkTECH Communications, a boutique agency focusing on interactive marketing for early stage tech start-ups, and develops websites for a number of personal clients.
Now studying Interactive Entertainment at USC, James' most recent work includes directing a commercial for Charlie’s Hair & Spa for Men, and assistant directing for a number of projects, including a short film with MixTape Collective and a music video for the pop band Petrel. He continues to write short screenplays and compose in his spare time. That is, when he isn’t snowboarding (or daydreaming about snowboarding). His other hobbies include iron welding, paintballing, videogame design / mapping, and table tennis.
