Ken Choy is a community organizer and promoter, and producer of Breaking the Bow, an Asian Pacific Islander Performing Artists and Writers Festival. While he is an active leader in the community, he regularly volunteers without fanfare for various organizations such as Chinese American Museum, Visual Communications, Los Angeles Asian Pacific Film Festival, API Equality, LA Pride, and Outfest. He has been recognized as an Outstanding Volunteer.
He is a playwright, acting coach, director, and novelist. He has been featured on CBS2 news as a professional coupon and mystery shopper.
Ken spent many years as a solo performance artist, but recently he has completed five works that revolve around large Asian Pacific families. The common theme is involvement, acceptance, and the coming together, despite the differences and because of the similarities, to overcome obstacles and achieve goals. All have his brand of high-energy humor, social commentary, and moments of farce and satire. He has been compared to Tyler Perry because of what is on the page and his involvement behind the scenes. As a queer Chinese Hawaiian, often what comes through in his writing is the acceptance and empowerment of the outsider.
