A lowly farmhand sells his soul to the Devil to be better at throwing horseshoes.
“Amnesia Town” is a dark romantic comedy in the vein of “Groundhog Day” and “Office Space” that follows lovable loser, William Rain, in his attempt to find love. A teacher on summer break, William vows that he will win over the love of his life, Victoria, and nothing will stand in his way. Now what seems to start off as a wistful romance quickly vanishes when we find out that William hates his life, he is forced to take a summer job with his slovenly roommate, Victoria has a serious boyfriend, and to top all of that he wakes up to find that his entire town is suffering from amnesia.
The true humor in William’s unusual situation comes from when his roommate convinces him to lie to everyone. It begs to ask the question, who would you be today if no one knew you yesterday? So after much debate, William is able to see the advantage of his off-the-wall circumstance and begins an elaborate set of lies all of which the townspeople whole-heartedly believe. Soon William is the Mayor of the town, the all-star quarterback who led them to victory, revered as an old, town legend. Even Scottie makes sure that their band receives a cult following.
All of the fun and games are devised to win a date with Victoria who is the only person in town who doesn’t believe all of the lies. He finally gets her to go on a date, but he is not able to put the lies aside. So through his self-centered behavior, he ruins what little relationship they had. He realizes that the only way to correct all the wrongs is by helping to restore everyone’s memories, but will it be too late.
“Amnesia Town” ultimately is a laugh out loud comedy about finding oneself and love, but it is unlike any movie in its genre because of its ability to introduce an outrageous concept while still keeping the laughs coming. Audiences will respond to the strong comedic timing of the story as well as the strong physical humor.

Robin O'Rourke This seems so familiar to me.....that was a joke. This idea is one of those simple yet clever concepts that I wish I had thought of first. Just the basic storyline is super and it can be done so many ways. The direction I imagine it would take would be simular to the recent Ricky Gervais comedy, "The Invention of Lying" which share very common ideas, but does not seem inspired by. I could spend a long time imagining different scenerios for this. The character, William, could have so much entertaining fun by messing with the people around him, while he is in the omniscent and powerful position. I think it is a team project. It's something that would need many channels of inspiration to really connect with the audience. The idea sparks so much imagination that it would be easy for an audience to drift into thought unless the film constantly hooked them with changes in energy and a multi-faceted approach to the question: What would you do if you could change everyones memories.
March 10, 2010Having said that, the script excerpt is hard to believe. I think you need to really consider letting the love story fall into place AFTER you have created the environment and the situational comedy. This film will be uniquely desirable to audiences based on it's premise, not it's stock genre. Think Office Space: That was a love story, a crime story, a copier killer story, and really the story of a lonely accountant who was obbessed with his stapler. Does anyone really think about the romance part of it? (Unless you're making the "O' face)
I hope you create the exciting and obviously hilarious town that is the title, then toss in a love story for commercial audiences sake.
George Vasquez 5 second tom! haha. lets see if William can tie all the lies together to get Vicky.
March 9, 2010William Stephens GOOD LUCK, it's almost over! :-)
March 8, 2010Josh McKenzie With the similarities to other movies aside, I definitely see this being able to go somewhere good. With the right changes and/or additions to the plot, it could really work as a decent comedy. Your writing has a very good flow to it as well.
March 7, 2010So, keep up the good work David, and good luck with the contest.
Thomas Daley I have to say that I really love this idea, David. I think spinning the story from being about the lead's amnesia to being about the loss of memory in everyone surrounding him is very unique. I am interested to know whether William will be able to redeem himself or go from being the lovable loser to the ultimate protagonist. Excellent work and good luck.
March 7, 2010Rebecca Wallace I really like the concept. It would be really cute. It has alot of potential as both a comedy and a romance. Great job =)
March 6, 2010Amanda Lane this is really cute. :)
March 5, 2010Its something that i think i would like to see, with the right actors playing your leads. i think it would really be hit or miss, and heres hoping its a hit!! :D
Scott Youngs I definitely see the potential for some deep, sardonic comedy in the concept. And, as the synopsis points out, while it smacks of Groundhog Day, it seems fresh enough to sustain interest over two hours. Those first four pages are a little slow, but really, who frequently goes headlong into slow-simmering comedy like this anyway? Kudos on a hot concept.
March 3, 2010Todd Schowalter I really like the concept! Putting your hero in a setting where he is living anonymously almost has some "It's A Wonderful Life" similarities. I think there is a lot of comedy potential and would enjoy reading more.
March 3, 2010John Higgins This is a great concept. I like the balance between romanticism and ridiculous comedy. You do well with words, and your charcter's are very clear. I like that - according to your synopsis - William Rain has a definite character arch, who is relatable to pretty much anyone who has ever misrepresented themselves to get ahead.
March 2, 2010'Amnesia Town' is unique in that it combines fable with a sense of reality. And that's good storytelling.
If I were to suggest a change in anything based off of what is in the pitch, it would be to set his sites a little more higher in so far as his ultimate objective goes. But, in the excerpt, he lies about having plans to go to Europe, so that does imply that he would like to be much bigger and better than he is. Also, good forshadowing with the lying!
