  2. Ignore Alien Orders

A private detective, hired by the First Lady, discovers America's leaders and opinion shapers are being replaced by shape-shifting aliens.

The home life of Marcus Dermot, assistant public defender, and his wife, Angela, a real estate agent with too much time on her hands, is interrupted by the unexpected arrival of an mutual friend from college days. Gerald Greene, who went missing a decade before, a no-show as Marcus's best man at their wedding, is in from a losing streak in St. Louis, to ask if he can stay at the Dermots' home until he can land a new job. Angela is furious, and tells Marcus to refuse him. But Marcus, plied by Gerald's appeals to old times' sake, lets him stay.

They rekindle their old warm, but, once Gerald and Angela are alone, it becomes clear that she and Gerald, unbeknownst to Marcus, once shared an irresistable sexual chemistry, which they also re-kindle. Gerald knows Angela's secret, that she likes a little bondage with her sex play. The result reminds them both that she sometimes blacks out when her orgasms get too intense.

Gerald stunningly lands a lucrative new position, which prompts Marcus to investigate a job in corporate law for himself. Meanwhile, Gerald and Angela have a final romp in bed which accidentally kills her. He dresses her body on the bed, and flees. Marcus arrives to triumphantly announce his own new job, only to discover Angela is dead.

After the memorial service, Marcus discovers evidence of the lovers' tryst. Obsessed, he lures Gerald into another hike to the mountain top, where he shoves Gerald off the cliff face. Gerald's broken body is soon found by a group of hikers...

Though wrestling with his conscience, Marcus dates a female paralegal, Susan. But his sense of identity is cracking up, as he grows erratic, adopts Gerald's mannerisms and even sees himself as Gerald in the mirror. His boss becomes concerned and insists Marcus see a psychiatrist.

Just as Marcus appears to have recovered, Gerald appears at his door once again. Himself recovered from near-death, now delivering pizza for a living, Gerald pleads with Marcus to let the past go and make a pact that neither will use their knowledge to destroy the other.

Gerald's reappearance destroys Marcus's psychological progress. Unhinged, he loses his job and his new relationship. He then binds Susan and calls for a night-time pizza delivery from her house at the edge of a wood. He ambushes Gerald when he arrives with the order, attempts to strangle him, and pursues him into the woods for their final confontation, which ends with Marcus literally knocking himself out.

Susan and Gerald dine in the restaurant where she and Marcus met, lament Marcus's tragic loss of his faculties and psychiatric confinement, then discuss their future together in St. Louis.
