  1. Life Support

    When life becomes unbearable.

Phil and Chuck, both 25, are viral sensations on YouTube with their comedy show, “Phuck”. Unfortunately they’re number two on ratings list. The number one spot goes to a Shane Dawson who for the most part is unknown to the general public, but with 1.3 million subscribers to his show on YouTube, he’s like a comedy god.

Tired of living in Dawson’s shadow, Phil and Chuck with the help of their chronically depressed cameraman Mike, devise a scheme which they hope will lead to Dawson’s demise. Their plan: defame his character by secretly following him with a video camera and catching him in compromising situations which they can leak to the Press.

They promptly hop into Mike’s minivan and embark on a three-day road trip to L.A. Along the way they encounter a ragtag motorcycle gang who happen to be avid Shane Dawson fans, a gun-toting granny right after she’s robbed a liquor store, a trigger-happy State Trooper who gets into a shootout with granny, a black man who claims he’s a runaway slave and doesn’t know slavery’s been abolished, and a hitchhiking suicidal emo girl who Mike falls in love with at first sight. All this and they’ve still got 1,300 miles left to go. God only know what else lies in store for them.

When they finally arrive in L.A., they have no problem tracking down Shane Dawson (and his entourage of weird friends) and then they quickly realize this guy doesn’t have a moral bone in his whole body…everything he does is compromising and scandalous. They get footage of him doing things that Paul Rueben look like a choir boy.

When they show the incriminating evidence to Steve Brock, a Reporter for the L.A. Times, who’s battling his own personal demons, I.E. heroin addiction, he tells them he’s not interested in Shane Dawson’s exploits due to the fact that there’s yet another Tiger Wood’s sex scandal brewing. Apparently Tiger didn’t learn the lesson from his last little embarrassing ordeal.

Phil, Chuck and Mike are left with no other alternative but to confront Shane face-to-face, and persuade him to throw in the towel. Instead Shane throws a right hook to Phil’s jaw which results in a fist-flying, hair-pulling, high heel-throwing melee. Once the dust finally settles everyone is left sprawled out on the floor catching their breath.

And then Shane drops the bomb. He confides in Phil, Chuck and Mike that he’s dying. He’s only got about twenty years left to live. Apparently he’s suffering from a debilitating disease that will eventually kill him…in about twenty years. Phil, Chuck and Mike are flabbergasted. And that’s when Phil has an epiphany. They decide to join forces with Shane and create a new show called, “Phuck Shane Dawson”.

The show will become such a major viral sensation that NBC will offer them a seven figure to do a weekly television sitcom, and at Shane’s request 25% of all proceeds of the show will go to disaster relief funds for third-world countries and Feed The Children, while another 5% percent will go to research toward finding a cure for his debilitating disease now known as SDSD, which is an abbreviation for Shawn Dawson’s Slow Death.

In the very end, the emo girl confides in Mike that the reason she wants to commit suicide is because she’s pregnant. He talks her out of killing herself and instead accompanies her to an abortion clinic. At the last minute she decides not to go through with it, and then Mike drops down on one knee and proposes to her to which she emphatically replies with a “hell yes” and they live happily ever-after.

Writer’s note: If this project is picked there could also be a an opportunity to have a separate contest where YouTubers send in a two paragraph description putting our trio in another unfortunate mishap during their road trip, and then pick one as a winner and include it in the film, thus creating a bigger buzz.

Also, in the event the real YouTube viral sensation Shane Dawson is not able to be involved in this project you could change the name of the protagonist to Shane “Dobson”. Problem solved.

Anthony Russo I'm one of the people who doesn't get the references but I don't think that matters a whole lot. This is definitely a fresh, exciting and a very interactive concept, and the writer's strength seems to be in engaging dialgoue.

Roger Shao Definitely an interesting concept that has a very "NOW" feel to it. The only problem is that the entire concept is hinged on people knowing who Shane is and would probably go over the head of most people over 40.

Michael Harrop Thanks for the feedback, Roger. That'd be easy to fix by showing clips of Shane Dawson's YouTube videos during the opening credit sequence. Problem solved. On a seperate note, I was in a mad rush to meet the deadline and blew the log line. It should be this: Phil and Chuck have the second highest rated comedy show on YouTube. There's only one thing keeping them from being number one...Shane Dawson.
