Garbage Men
After garbage man, Cliff Sanderson loses his job, he decides to run for mayor in the corrupt community of Camarillo, CA.
The film opens with a scene with three garbage men, Cliff Sanderson, Abraham “Kenny” Gibson, and Hector Herrera eating lunch. During this scene we learn about a school boy infatuation of Trisha Nilsson by Kenny. After lunch the guys head back to work. A talk radio personality discusses the economic situation locally. The situation is dire. We learn that the sanitation department is in danger of being shut down.
Camarillo, CA is broke. All three men are going through their own seperate financial hardships as it is. After repeated bill collector calls, Kenny retreats to a bar. Here Kenny lays it all out for a bartender and a regular. Hector runs into Kenny at the bar then tells his story.
Next morning is regular. Cliff gets ready for work. His family eats breakfast. Cliff arrives at work. None of the trucks have left the yard. All the employees are inside the small office looking for answers of the highly reported story. The sanitation department has been locked out until further notice. The employees have nothing to do but go home. Cliff organizes a public showing of garbage people at the next city council meeting.
The city council meeting is a normal, bland meeting. One dissenter on the council board is revealed. After discussing the department shutdown, the meeting breaks. After the break, the public can speak on relevant topics. We hear from John, Hector, Trisha, Kenny and finally Cliff.
As Cliff drives home from picking up a drunken John in Santa Monica, a montage of scenes shows the downfall of each member of the story. In the end of the montage, it''s announced that city council votes to close down the sanitation department.
Two weeks later, Cliff''s been on his easychair for a week. Bob Swanz, city council member, shows up at his door. Bob and Cliff tour Camarillo, CA and it is a disaster. Garbage has overrun the streets, front yards, and lives of the inhabitants. Bob asks for Cliff''s help. He wants Cliff to run for mayor. After much protest, Cliff decides to run.
Cliff, with the help of Bob and his fellow garbage people, prepares for the election to take place within months. Cliff jumps through hoops to get his name on the ballot. He then campaigns by connecting with the citizens of Camarillo, CA. He identifies with the inhabitants. Something the incumbent could never do. A debate is held the weekend before the election which seals the deal for Cliff.
To end the movie, there is another montage of scenes tying everything together. Cliff wins the election, hires his garbage people friends as staff. Kenny gets the woman, Jenkins goes to jail, the city is clean and experiencing great growth.
