The Portal
The ancient Celts felt that at certain places at certain times of the year, the "veil" between this world and other worlds was thin, and could be crossed. Their druid priests could cross over into these other worlds, and what was there, could come here. They marked these sacred places by building structures like stone chambers and standing stones. These are seen throughout England and Ireland, and some have been discovered over here too.
Some of these are in a remote wilderness area upstate, evidence of a Celtic visit to the northeastern United States centuries ago. They have been dismissed by local archaeologists as unimportant ruins, probably built by the colonials. But others know better. For these mark a place where the veil is thin, and during a ritual when they were here, the ancient druid priests parted this veil and something came through. Something from another level of reality, another dimension. Something evil.
The druids were able to send it back, but when certain conditions are right, the "portal" opens, and this monstrosity comes back. A group of modern day druids know about this, and every year they travel to this remote area to perform a ritual to keep the portal sealed.
But this year the property where the portal is has been sold by the state to a wealthy developer who has no knowledge of the portal, and would not believe it if he was told. He fenced off the property and has his own security patrol it, and the druids could not get to the portal this year.
And now people are turning up dead. Campers, hikers, members of the private security patrol. Bodies found mutilated. Because this year the portal opened and something came through. Something from another level, another dimension. Something monstrous. Something evil.
