wakeup
A businesswoman tries to reconnect with her long-absent father when she discovers him working at a New York City hotel.
A man - we'll call him The Ombudsman - narrates a short passage from his childhood, watching a puppet mouse called Topo Gigio on Ed Sullivan. Static.
Then he finds himself playing video games with someone he doesn't know. The stranger wins, and comments on how much better he feels, he was so angry.
He disappears.
Into the darkness we find The Ombudsman, trapped with projected images of puppet mouse Topo Gigio, who declares himself the Angel of Death. The Ombudsman remembers nothing about himself. Topo Gigio tells him...many peoples coming.
And The Ombudsman finds himself in another apartment. An angry woman cooking a Southern ham. Like her grandma used to make. She cries with happiness.
And disappears.
The Ombudsman demands from Topo why he's there. Topo treats him to a montage of nuclear devastation. And then tells The Ombudsman that he makes people forget their anger. That he's not done.
He finds himself in another house, A woman named Emily arrives. She's not angry. In fact, she's peculiarly charming and interesting.
The Ombudsman doesn't get anything from Topo on her. He finds himself in a closet, with Emily wondering where he disappeared to.
He strolls with Emily in the nearby woods. He finds out Emily is a Renaissance girl, likes all sorts of things. She's confused that he doesn't seem to remember they're on a date.
They check the fridge for dinner. When The Ombudsman checks, it's empty. When Emily checks, it's full.
The Ombudsman pleads to Topo for help. None comes.
He forages with Emily through old boxes in his basement. She teases him about his lack of organizational skills. Finally, they find a particularly old box and unseal it.
They find many, many Topo Gigio plushies. Emily remembers seeing him on television.
The two finish dinner under the stars. Emily talks about her childhood, how everything was more alive and vibrant, how the adult world seemed bland.
The Ombudsman talks about how nothing surprises him anymore. How his life hasn't had possibilities. She tells him he can change it if he wants to.
She notices that the moon's not there, but she remembers it rising.
He kisses her and they make love. The sky flickers, constellations flip, time seizes above.
Emily wakes up to find The Ombudsman brushing his teeth. He describes a dream. Emily backs off. He's describing HER dreams.
Spooked, she realizes she doesn't remember anything before she walked through the door. She asks his name.
The Ombudsman stands before Topo. He remembers everything. Topo says that it's his time now; the Ombudsman has the power to make people happy, and now he's made himself happy.
He finds himself in the apartment again with Emily. He says that he's going to leave. He invites her to come, but she feels that she should stay.
Then he tells her that she was his wife and her name is Emily. And he disappears.
Emily stands before Topo Gigio. She is the new Ombudsman. She's going to make lots of friends.
Someone knocks the front door.
