The 5D Mark II Continued: Production and Post Challenges

For the past two weeks, my DP, John Francis McCarthy, and I have been using two Canon 5D Mark II's to shoot a short documentary on an entertainment/lifestyle blogger working in New York City. I figured since I had been gushing over the camera a few weeks ago, before I bought it, I should post a follow-up now that I own it and use it.

Excellent article about how to avoid ADR headaches in The Studio Daily Blog today. Woodhall has some great advice for directors, like "In the heat of production, with a large crew, it’s easy to “move on” even after the Director has been told about car noise, airplane noise or a host of other sound issues. Often sound recordists make their issues known and are told that “we will fix it in the mix.” Many things can be fixed with good sound editing and mixing but often Directors and actors will find themselves on an ADR stage replacing bad lines of dialog." and "I always suggest to editors and directors to take a good listen through headphones of their edit to determine the quality of the audio if they haven’t by the time they are going to audio post." Good stuff.

While purists insist on shooting film despite high media and processing costs, more and more filmmakers are turning to innovative and exciting HD solutions - like the Canon EOS 5D Mark II - to photograph their films for a fraction of the cost.
Last week, Canon released a highly-anticipated firmware update for the 5D Mark II, allowing users to manually control aperture, ISO sensitivity, and shutter speed while shooting HD video at full 1080p resolution. Whereas before, serious filmmakers attempting to use the camera for feature filmmaking had to devise elaborate workarounds to achieve full control over their image, the firmware upgrade means standard cinematographic effects can now be executed easily and intuitively.

FCP and RED advice from PVC

If you work on FCP and are using or have considered using the RED, check out this post by Adam Wilt on the Pro Video Coalition Problog.
It breaks down one possible Red / FCP / Color workflow and Adam's own experiences using the setup are also informative. Good luck getting off the PVC site; it will suck you in with all of it's educational articles, like this one on color theory and this one about using loops to score your projects if you are not a natural musician.
We Need You to Create a Promo Reel

Massify is making a promo reel to show off all of the amazing work that our community has done in the past year and a half, and we'd love to hire an editor on Massify to put it together for us.
It should be a pretty fun job, and we need somebody as soon as possible. The pay is $1200, which is for a completed video (graphics, sound, etc).
