Lessons from Last Year

Lessons from Last Year
Happy New Year, independent filmmakers! What better way could there possibly be to start the new year than by looking at the trends and business practices that dominated the American film industry in 2009? This sharp, perceptive, and funny post on IFC's The Independent Eye blog does just that. Covering issues ranging from the decline of star-driven movies at the box-office to the rise of 3D, the article brings up some very good points and raises some truly interesting questions about the immediate future of filmmaking. You know what they say about those who do not learn from history - so click here to take a look at the piece and keep yourself in the know!

Herzog on Directing
11/23/2009 at 1:13 PM by Suraj Das
Writer-director and independent filmmaking legend Werner Herzog recently gave this engrossing interview, posted on the Rotten Tomatoes website. In the piece, Herzog lists his five favorite films, discusses creative decision-making and production challenges on the set of the forthcoming "Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans," and compares working with Klaus Kinski to directing Nicholas Cage (who appears to have turned in a truly notable performance in Herzog's latest). A fascinating read, for dedicated Herzog fans and newbies alike.
If you're unfamiliar with Herzog's oeuvre, now is as good a time as any to start making your way through his groundbreaking body of work. I recommend starting with the 2005 documentary, "Grizzly Man," because it is at once accessible and complex; the premise of the doc is deceptively simple, but the themes and ideas running through the film are anything but. If you enjoy "Grizzly Man," you're going to want to start plowing through Herzog's earlier German masterpieces as soon as possible. Luckily, much of his work, including the essential "Aguirre: The Wrath of God," "Stroszek," and "The Enigma of Kaspar Hauser," are now widely-available on DVD and can be streamed on-demand on Netflix Instant Watch.

New Profile Design
7/13/2009 at 7:52 AM by Amy Allen

We're happy to introduce our latest version of Massify Profiles. Hopefully, these tweaks will help you better promote yourself and your work. Read on for an overview of the changes and tips on how to get the most of the new design.
Collaborative Functionality
6/8/2009 at 2:30 PM by Amy Allen
It's now possible to add collaborators to your projects on Massify! To do this, go into your project and choose 'collaborators'. Then you can add as many collaborators as you'd like to your project.
If you create a project, you're known as the project owner, and you control how much access your collaborators have. There are three levels of permissions: admin, edit, and read only. Admins can do anything the project owner can do - add and delete users on the project, manage job submissions, etc. Users with edit privileges can add comments and assets (photos, videos, etc.). Read Only is just what it sounds like.
We Need You to Create a Promo Reel
5/22/2009 at 6:29 AM by Amy Allen
Massify is making a promo reel to show off all of the amazing work that our community has done in the past year and a half, and we'd love to hire an editor on Massify to put it together for us.
It should be a pretty fun job, and we need somebody as soon as possible. The pay is $1200, which is for a completed video (graphics, sound, etc).
We'd like to get going right away, so apply ASAP for this position. You can find all of the details in the job posting.
Job Tweets and New Dashboard
4/15/2009 at 10:23 AM by Amy Allen
Job opportunities posted to Massify can now show up in your twitter feed! Follow new opportunities @massifyjobs for a real-time job feed. (You can also follow Massify @massify if you don't already.)
And if you've logged in since Tuesday, you've probably noticed that your dashboard looks different. Instead of just looking at a different view of your profile, you'll now find recent activity on the site, including new projects, videos, and comments. You can also check out the most recent cast and crew jobs listed on the right. Let us know what you think!
Lastly, the first few entries for the concept phase of Killer can be found here. There's a lot of good material up already; show the creative folks behind the ideas some love by rating their concepts. Killer Films will take ratings into account when choosing which film to produce, so your voice matters.
Change Is Good
3/31/2009 at 1:53 PM by Amy Allen
More than just a facelift, Massify’s redesign underscores some pretty major site-wide improvements. The goal behind these changes, as always, is to enable you to create quality content more efficiently.
To start, we now have a fully site-integrated jobs section, which is just what it sounds like. You can post job opportunities and look for jobs here. If you are a project owner, you can find both your cast and your crew on Massify, either by creating a new project or pulling information from an existing project you have on the site. When applying to a job, you can choose which information from your profile is included in the application. And since our job and casting sections are part of the larger Massify community, we hope it adds transparency and efficiency to a sometimes daunting process.
New Studio
3/20/2009 at 12:12 PM by Amy Allen
You're looking at the new Massify Studio. It's an online publication that will cover everything that happens on the site, from the latest in Massify partnered productions to special features with members of the Massify community. We’ll also touch on what's happening now in the world of film and online content, highlighting some of our favorite resources and articles from across the blogosphere.
Designed to put a spotlight on the Massify community and your projects, look forward to plenty of print and video interviews. For instance, over the next 10 weeks we'll be featuring an inspiring video series with filmmakers who had their films in the 2009 SXSW film festival.
If you'd like to be featured in the Studio, let us know why at feedback@massifycorp.com.
Visit us at SXSW
3/14/2009 at 1:05 PM by Amy Allen

Yo. We're here in Austin at SXSW, interviewing filmmakers and talking to people, and if you happen to be here too, you should come visit us!
We'll have 4 people from Massify there, so you can either follow us on Twitter or find us at the trade show, which will be in the Austin convention center. Above is the map. We're booth #116 (as if you couldn't tell), which is sandwiched between a (nonworking?) door and a staff booth. If you go into the main entrance, and turn left, then make a right, we should be on the left hand side.
We'd love to meet anybody who can make it!
