While purists insist on shooting film despite high media and processing costs, more and more filmmakers are turning to innovative and exciting HD solutions - like the Canon EOS 5D Mark II - to photograph their films for a fraction of the cost.
Last week, Canon released a highly-anticipated firmware update for the 5D Mark II, allowing users to manually control aperture, ISO sensitivity, and shutter speed while shooting HD video at full 1080p resolution. Whereas before, serious filmmakers attempting to use the camera for feature filmmaking had to devise elaborate workarounds to achieve full control over their image, the firmware upgrade means standard cinematographic effects can now be executed easily and intuitively.
The implications for low-budget filmmaking are enormous. For less than $3,000, filmmakers can own a camera that allows for full, manual control of beautiful, 1080p HD footage. And the camera's exceptional low-light performance (thanks to ISO sensitivity up to 25,600) means filmmakers can spend less money on large G&E packages and less time tweaking lights on set. (Above is nighttime footage shot on the 5D Mark II using only available light.)
DIY filmmakers have really taken to the 5D Mark II, devising solutions like this homemade rig allowing for smooth camera movement and this trick for converting the HD footage to 24p. Companies are also realizing that serious filmmaking on the 5D Mark II means filmmakers are going to want professional grade accessories ranging from XLR audio inputs to weatherproof and waterproof camera housing. (Check out some footage shot underwater in the Red Sea on the 5D Mark II)
I recently bought the 5D Mark II myself, and plan on posting more videos, articles, and tutorials as I familiarize myself with the camera. In the meantime though, definitely check out some of the impressive footage from the camera making the rounds on the net - including this trailer for "Colin Hearts Kay," a microbudget feature film shot entirely on the 5D Mark II.
