Urman's Paladin Will Make People "Think"
We’ve met Mark Urman, and think he’s a lovely fellow, so it’s nice to report that he has launched Paladin, a new distribution outfit staffed with some of his former ThinkFilm associates. He’s assembled an initial four-film release slate, including the Bryce Dallas Howard starrer “The Loss of a Teardrop Diamond,” which bowed at the Toronto film fest last year. Amanda Sherwin serves as Paladin’s head of marketing and Michael Tuckman will handle theatrical sales. The execs worked with Urman in the same capacities for seven years at ThinkFilm.
Mandate's "Dream": Dance, Dance, Dance...
Mandate Pictures has picked up the teen dance drama script “Dream On” from Jason Ubaldi for Laurence Mark to produce. Project revolves around an aspiring Olympic gymnast who discovers the underground hip-hop scene in Atlanta. Mark, who most recently produced “Julie and Julia,” and “Dreamgirls” before that, will produce “Dream On” with Rachel Miller, who conceived the idea.
Ne-Yo The One for "Battle"
R&B singer-songwriter Ne-Yo, along with Ramon Rodriguez, Taylor Handley and Cory Hardrict, are suiting up for “Battle: Los Angeles,” the sci-fi war flick that Jonathan Liebesman is directing for Columbia. Jadin Gould, Bryce Cass and Joey King also have joined the cast, which includes Aaron Eckhart, Michelle Rodriguez, Bridget Moynahan and Michael Pena. Ne-Yo, who just booked the gig to write and sing the closing song for Disney’s “The Princess and the Frog,” will plays a corporal in the platoon. Rodriguez, Handley and Hardrict are members of the platoon fighting the invading aliens. Cass, Gould and King are kids trapped in a community center.
Look Out, Marvel! Here Comes DC!
In a move long anticipated since the establishment of Marvel Entertainment a couple years ago, Warner Bros. Entertainment Inc. (WBEI) has finally created DC Entertainment Inc., a new company founded to fully realize the power and value of the DC Comics brand and characters across all media and platforms, to be run by Diane Nelson. Paul Levitz, who has served as President & Publisher of DC Comics since 2002, will segue from that role to return to his roots as a writer for DC and become a contributing editor and overall consultant to DCE. This transition will take place as expeditiously as possible without disrupting DC’s business operations. DC Entertainment, a separate division of WBEI, will be charged with strategically integrating the DC Comics business, brand and characters deeply into Warner Bros. Entertainment and all its content and distribution businesses, including feature films, television, interactive entertainment, direct-to-consumer platforms and consumer products.
