Movies are not everything, they’re just the best way to say everything. In the past four years, I’ve been working as a freelance editor and videographer as well as English teacher and translator in Poland. I studied at The Polish National Film School in Lodz, where I met many great people, worked on many sets and most of all had the chance to direct a few fiction films, a documentary and a music video, which has played on MTV in Poland on numerous occasions.

My diploma film, History of Solitude, has screened at dozens of festivals internationally, the San Francisco International Film Festival among them, and picked up the Special Jury Award at the European Independent Film Festival in Paris. My fiction short, Slovakia, was completed in Fall 2009. Before that, I managed my father’s furniture company, at the production plant in China and the distribution center near Los Angeles. And before that, I worked on film sets in Los Angeles, where I studied humanities at Loyola Marymount University, founded a literary zine, delivered pizza and interned at the corporate office of David E Kelley Productions. In the Fall of 2009, I returned to my native San Francisco Bay Area to prepare for my debut feature, The Hipsters, based on an unpublished novel by M J Sytnik.

Matt Szymanowski also wrote, directed, edited and produced the feature film The Purple Onion (2015). He is the author of the novel Cupertino.
